Shutter Shock

I got home to that 5 lb. package I mentioned yesterday… any guesses what was in it?

Well, some of you already knew, so I’ll just show ya :)

Due to a surprise tax return, I was able to get this amazing camera I’ve been coveting for SUCH a long time! It’s a Canon EOS Rebel XSi, 12.2 MegaPixels, and it came with the lens shown. Bye bye point and shoot for now… hello lovely SLR! I know I’m late on the bandwagon with this one, but I’ve wanted a dSLR since my last photography class in high school in 1998! I can’t believe this is actually MINE!

While I waited for the battery to charge, Adam and I went out for a quick bite to eat at the local Mediterranean place. I got some hummus, and a variety of meats including lamb shwarma and kefta kabobs (seasoned ground beef patties). It was delicious, and since I had no camera with me, you’ll just have to take my word on it. After dinner, we went on a 30 minute walk at Woodfield Mall, and managed to not purchase anything! I was so eager to get home and play with the new camera.

Like any other happy pet mama, the first things I took pictures of were our animals… so bear with me! I’ll take food pictures tomorrow, I promise! For now, please enjoy our furbabies.

I’m so beyond thrilled with how simple it is to take great shots with this thing. If any of you have any SLR hints for me, feel free to share in the comments! Adam got me a fantastic case that has its very own poncho, so that’s taken care of. What else ya got for me??

A couple questions to be answered:

Hi Mara, i know that you’ve been doing WW and now the paleo eating plan , i was just wondering what your stats were? weight -wise. Where you started, where you currently are, what your goal is?
If this is too personal of a question, i apologize, i was just wondering since i was reading your ’shrinking’ self section.
Ok, here goes: I’m 5′4″ (on a tall day), and as of right now I weigh 228 lbs. My max EVER was 265 before WW, I lost about 15 before I started WW. To be honest though, I don’t know my true maximum weight because I was afraid of the scale. I was squeezing myself into size 22 jeans though… My ultimate goal is 150 lbs, but my short-term goal for now is to get back under 200. I hit 197 for a period of two weeks before my grandma got sick, and then I never saw it again. I’m just taking it one day, one meal, one hour at a time.


What is your most embarrasing moment? Aside from just sharing my weight stats on my blog? My most embarrassing moment had to be, well, its two times. First, summer before senior year of high school, my color guard team (yes, I was color guard captain) and I were driving down to color guard camp in a rental van with our coach. I must’ve eaten something bad, because upon stopping at the welcome center, I managed to gain the nickname “Ralph” for the rest of Senior year. Also, I was once walking downtown Chicago with my friend Bobby, and I managed to fall off my shoes in the middle of an intersection, and a cab honked at me! I had sprained my ankle, but what did the cabbie care??

Locavore

It has been quite a long week, and I’m beyond thrilled that tomorrow is Friday! We have a no-students-present institute day, which are always fun. Not that I don’t love my students, but sometimes it’s nice to hang out with adults.

Sometimes, I’ll spend some time up in the main office at work and chat with our assistant principals about various issues with students, or sometimes we chat about nothing. And sometimes, we find out that we have a lot more in common than we originally thought! Yesterday, one assistant principal was in her office eating the most delicious-looking salad out of a recyclable paper box, much like the ones used at Whole Foods. I got very excited and asked her where exactly near school she’d gotten such a fantastic-looking salad. She informed me, quite giddily, that an old restaurant/bar had been bought out and converted from a typical pub into a local/sustainable and mostly organic restaurant! We then talked food and restaurants for quite some time, and she insisted that I try Duke’s Alehouse and Kitchen ASAP.

Luckily tonight, I had quite some time to kill! After school and a meeting, I had about 4 hours of free time before I got to be a judge at the regional spelling bee. I went to the DMV to get my name changed on my license, did the same at the bank, and then headed to Duke’s for an early dinner.

I was greeted by a friendly bartender who was more than happy to tell me about their menu, specials, and seemed very knowledgeable about why their menu was different than other places.

I’d perused the menu online, and had made up my mind that I would be getting a tallgrass beef burger, without the bun, for my dinner. To say that it delighted me when Robert (I think that was his name?) the bartender informed me that their cheese choices were: 4-year aged cheddar, blue, gouda, mozzarella, feta, oh…and goat. Yes, goat cheese. Amazing fresh and soft local goat cheese. Oh, and organic broccolini (not local, as its a frozen tundra here right now.) Apparently, up in the county where my school is, there are dozens of small farms… some are more famous (Kinnickinnick and Saluté) but most I’d never heard of.

The bottom of the menu reads “I want my farmer to be paid well, for the same reason I want my airline pilot to be.” I love it! I read that menu while I waited for my food, and loved the pride the place has in supporting local and organic farmers. So many restaurants like this are out of reach for Adam and I, as they’re downtown Chicago and price-prohibitive. This however, is the opposite! It’s relatively inexpensive (my burger was $10.50) and in the lovely suburb where my school is.

My food arrived quickly, and to say it was beautiful is an understatement:

And the burger, on its soft pretzel bun with bibb lettuce, roma tomatoes, and soft fresh goat cheese… notice how that patty is uneven and not round. That means a PERSON actually made that patty, and stood there while it cooked:

To say that it pained me to take that burger off that beautiful bun is an understatement as well. I can only imagine how phenomenal it tasted… it sure smelled good. I looked like a freak, sitting by myself at a bar table, sniffing a pretzel roll and tweeting about how excited I was to eat this burger. Oh, and taking pictures of everything while the locals were sitting there wondering why their kids’ Spanish teacher was photographing her food.

You know what this burger tasted like? It tasted like meat. It tasted the way, when you want a good burger, that a good burger should taste. So much of the ground beef that I buy is fairly tasteless on its own and needs loads of seasoning. I’m willing to bet that this burger had a sprinkle of salt and pepper and that’s it. Next time I go, I’m certainly trying the organic steak, as well as making sure that I have someone else to order a dessert so I can have a bite. Something about a “trio of artisanal brownies” and “build your own cupcake” are quite intriguing.

With a pleasantly full belly, I went to judge the spelling bee, and then headed home. I was greeted with a bubble-pack envelope with a Canadian customs label on it. I immediately knew what it was and tore right in! The amazing Marianne from the blog From French Fries To Flax Seeds had sent me an Olympic care package!! There was a pair of the official red Olympic mittens, and a pin that says “Eh!” from Lululemon! (please excuse the ratty nails and tired face).

What are you and Adam doing for V-Day? I think we’re staying in, drinking some wine, and I’m making cheese fondue… with bread. V-day is one holiday that I feel it necessary to splurge no matter what. And you know? That’s ok! ONE day of splurging and eating bread will not make me lose all the progress I’ve made!

Tomorrow evening, we are off to O’Hare to pick up my mom and stepdad from their trip to Mexico. We’ve been watching this adorable face all week… Stella the Goldendoodle!

Shoes & Answers

Didja miss me last night?? I know you did!

Apparently, Wednesdays are my “be really busy until really late, and have no time to blog at night” days! Last night, I was lucky enough to be selected to be part of a focus group talking about trends in one of my favorite things: shoes!

It went from 6p.m. to almost 8, but before I got there, I had the pleasure of eating one of my favorite non-fast quick foods: Chipotle! With my new eating plan focusing on using NO grains and healthy fats, I ordered a bowl with carnitas, veggies, extra salsa, guacamole and lettuce. The picture is stuck on my phone at the moment… I’ll add it later, I promise!

I got a few more questions to answer!

When is a good time? I didn’t know where to go with this one. A good time for what? If you meant “what do I think is a good time” as in a fun time, I’d say any time when I’m surrounded by good friends!

Do you make money off your blog? If so,  how much? I do make a small amount of money off my blog, but due to FoodBuzz’s confidentiality agreement, I’m not at liberty to discuss how much, but let’s just say that blogging does not put me in any sort of financial situation where I could say, quit my day job. I get just about enough to cover one grocery shopping trip, sometimes.

What’s your favorite part of every day? Why? **cheeseball alert** My very favorite part of any day is when I get home and am greeted by Adam with a hug. That’s when I really know I’m home and can relax.

If you could choose 6 things to bring with you and your hubby on a deserted island, what would those 6 items be? I’ve always been terrible at these deserted island questions, because I try to cheat. I’d say “a huge generator and my house with everything in it.” That’s not going to work. Ok, six things:

  1. My camera. I have to be able to take pictures of things!
  2. A small propane grill with extra canisters. I gotta be able to cook, and I can cook most anything on a grill.
  3. My favorite pillow. I can sleep just fine without a blanket, but without a good pillow, I just can’t get the right rest.
  4. Burt’s Bees lip balm. If you use it, you know why. If not, go get some! It’s the best!
  5. Our pets. Technically there are 3 of them, but they’re one entity. They’re like our children and I couldn’t bear to leave them!
  6. A first aid kit, for obvious reasons.

Just Call Me Granny!

Yep, its 5 p.m. here.

And I’ve already eaten dinner.

You know those days when there’s something to look forward to the next day, and you just can’t sleep? Maybe Christmas, or the day before your birthday? Well, when a teacher is anticipating a snow day, every little noise sounds like it could be a phone call… and then when the call never comes, it makes for a very sleepy day! When it started snowing harder late this morning, our district administration canceled all after school activities for both teachers and students and we got to all leave at 2:15. Rather than making a trip to the grocery store for dinner in the increasing snow, and deal with people who think its going to be the Snowpocalypse 2010 of the Midwest, we opted for something more epic.

I picked us up sandwiches from Baloneys with every intention of eating it later. Much later. But 4:30 rolled around and my stomach was rumbling, so I opted to eat dinner right then, and will probably have a snack later. I dissected this gorgeous reuben into a sauerkraut, corned beef, and swiss cheese salad… luckily I took a picture before I made it a disgusting-looking yet delicious-tasting mess:

It’s kind of nice being done with dinner this early… I feel like I can now just relax, maybe work on perfecting my chocolate almond cookie recipe, and definitely watch Biggest Loser. But, before I go, I got a few more anonymous questions that I’d like to take a minute to answer. These are SO much fun!

What’s your top 5 favorite foods? If we’re talking generically, that’s easy: sushi, cheese, roast chicken, peanut butter, and chocolate. If we’re talking specifically, it’s a bit harder, but I can do it: harumaki roll from Daruma (spicy tuna w/2 kinds of sauce, scallions, and more spicy sauce), burrata cheese, my mom’s (or grandma’s) roast chicken, PB & Co. Dark Chocolate Dreams PB, and any chocolate by Vosges.

Do you ever go through long periods of success with your weight loss and then fall off the wagon (rhetorical question)? I just did… :( What do you do to re-motivate yourself ? I was successful on Weight Watchers for a very long time. I quickly lost 50 lbs and then had a terrible year, and suddenly, losing weight lost priority. I lost most of my motivation to lose weight, and instead maintained for a LONG time (3-ish years). I’ve recently gained back 20 or so lbs, and honestly, the ONE thing that helped me get my motivation back was hearing about others’ success. A couple close friends are following a similar eating plan that I’ve recently started, and having great success…which has helped me keep going! My advice: find yourself a support system!!

I know you were on Weight Watchers, what plan are you following now or is just one you have come up with yourself? I loved your wedding photos…so beautiful! First of all, THANK YOU!!! I can’t believe the wedding was almost 3 months ago! I’m following, essentially, the Paleo Diet, as outlined on this site. I didn’t make it up, and as I mentioned here and above, having friends following it too have really helped!

What was your first date (ever) like? Let’s see… I didn’t even realize this WAS a date until years later. It was 6th grade, and this boy from my Hebrew school class liked me. His name was Micah and he wore Hypercolor shirts, and I thought he was SO COOL. He bought me a pen with roses on it for Hanukkah, and then one with my name engraved on it for Valentine’s day. At this point, he invited me to have dinner with his family. I accepted, got dressed up, and his mom made (mind you, this was 1991) veggie burgers and salads with alfalfa sprouts, and offered to teach me Sanskrit in exchange for some Hebrew we were learning. His dad ate his salad with his mouth open and sprouts were hanging out of his mouth like hair… and that’s all I remember!

Do you like turtles? YES! I like turtles :) I think they’re very cool animals, and have quite an affinity for Crush, the turtle from Finding Nemo, dude.

A Pleasant Surprise

On Wednesday night, I got a phone call from my friend Mary (which was odd, because I was JUST thinking about how we hadn’t talked in a while) and after a short chat as I made my healthy brownies we figured out that we would both be “husbandless” the following night. Her husband was away on business, and mine was at class until 9:30 p.m. so we decided to get together.

Since she works near Downtown Chicago, and I live a good hour from there, we found a place that was near the midpoint of the two places. (Hey Bender, seriously amazing places to eat on the same street, we should try them all!) There’s this odd little neighborhood on the far north side of Chicago called Edison Park. One side of the street is Chicago and the other is a suburb, and the way to tell is that the color of the street lights are different. The suburb uses standard “white” lights, whereas Chicago uses yellow sodium lights. Nonno Pino’s Italian kitchen came recommended by another friend, and I’m quite glad we decided to go there. I was immediately drawn in by their cute logo.

Since it was Chicago, parking was a little bit of a pain, but once we were both inside, it was worth it!

We sat down to peruse the menu, and immediately noticed that it was $4 martini night. While we decided which ones to get, we were pleasantly surprised by the warm, crusty Italian bread and olive oil, parmesan, and olive mixture that was placed in front of us.

We decided on a martini to drink. I got a French Martini (vodka, chambord, pineapple juice) which was as delicious as any I’ve ever had, and Mary had a mango martini which was also as fantastic as it was pretty

More bread eating ensued as we decided on entrees and caught up on the last couple months happenings. We ordered our entree after much deliberation, and soon a family-style Italian house salad arrived with two homemade dressings: creamy garlic and House italian

The entree decision for me was easy: risotto made with white wine, featuring spinach, artichoke hearts, mushrooms, and shrimp.

Mary opted for a veal tortellini with Italian sausage that had one of the most hearty tomato sauces I’ve ever had outside of my own house

Now, let me tell you a little bit about Mary and my friendship: we’ve been friends for nearly 25 years (how am I old enough to have a friend for 25 years?!) since we met in Kindergarten. As long as I can remember, she and I cooked and baked together, and every single time we gone out to eat, we get dessert. It was just our luck that the dessert menu at Nonno Pino’s had what they called “Chocolate Delight”. It was a decadent chocolate cake with layers of ganache between each one. It was a good thing we shared because I could’ve eaten a lot more of it!

Soon after polishing this off, we called it a night, since well…we had to work today! I was really glad to get to spend time with Mary, and since we could’ve had a good time at McDonalds, it was even nicer that the restaurant was fantastic! Unfortunately, any alcohol at all makes me quite sleepy, so I crashed as soon as I got home at 8:45, only to be awakened at 9:20 when Adam got out of class. I do finally feel rested though, after a week of being exhausted.

Veggie-Ful Day

I have to admit something to you all: I’ve been a veggie slacker lately. Seriously, it’s become a problem. Dinners will have a handful of veggies a serving, and lunch will usually have the same. It’s no wonder I’ve had such little energy! I started today with my first in a while green monster, and you’ll all be happy to know that the Cuisinart Blender crushes ice like a champ! Hopefully it’ll be in my OpenSky shop soon!

In any case, I followed up my breakfast of champions with… pizza. Yup, there was free pizza from my favorite local place at work, and I just couldn’t turn it down! No worries though, Adam had a wonderful suggestion! We’ve been desperately looking for a new coffee table for our living room for months now, and he’d been doing some shopping on his own during the day. There were none that really caught our eye that fit our measurements, so we decided to go to the “Mother Ship”… IKEA! We talked about just eating dinner at IKEA, but opted instead for Sweet Tomatoes, which is about 30 seconds away.

First and foremost, when we go to Sweet Tomatoes, I do my best to fill up on a complex and colorful salad, and have a couple spoons of the special side dishes they have on the salad bar.

Tonight’s mix was romaine lettuce, spinach, jicama, egg, green peppers, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, olives, a few blue cheese crumbles, a tablespoon of sunflower seeds, and a sample of the whole grain “fiesta” couscous and the curry wheatberry salad. I had a small cup of blue cheese dressing for dipping. QUITE delicious, and very veggie-ful!

Next, I had a bowl of the low-fat turkey and 3 bean chili with a little cheese and sour cream. Sorry, this doesn’t look terribly appetizing:

Along with that I had a few slivers of the sauteed vegetable focaccia with mushrooms, onions, and parmesan cheese:

Then, I had to have dessert. I always get dessert at Sweet Tomatoes! BUT rather than going with the chocolate muffin/nonfat fro-yo and chocolate syrup, I went with a small (literally, it was like, 3/4 c.) bowl half full of oatmeal-crumb topped apples with a little non-fat no sugar fro-yo:

We left satisfied, and headed to IKEA where the scents of cinnamon rolls and Swedish meatballs filled the air, and laminated furniture called to us… we ended up with this lovely $20 table

We got home and Adam put it together, and we promptly put the beautiful woven metal basket we got for our wedding from my mom’s friend and Cubs coasters on it! It’s really starting to look like actual real grown-ups live here… I like it!

Winner Winner Chinese Dinner

I know I swore my cooking posts would start again today, but after last week’s simple non-postworthy recipes, the subzero (yes, actually BELOW ZERO) temperatures, and the severe lack of ingredients in the house, we opted for a carry-out Chinese dinner from one of our favorite places, China Wok. I’m a slacker, I know.

Oh, and it was really tempting to not leave the house after seeing these hanging outside our front window:

Those are approximately 5 to 8 feet long icicles, the longest of which hangs directly above our front door. SCARY!

Back to dinner…

I started with half of these amazing steamed dumplings full of spicy pork:

And the rest of what I had didn’t photograph well… one patty of chicken egg foo young, a few bites of chicken fried rice, a bit of some spicy noodle thing, and of course:

On A Pedestal

Last night, Adam and I decided that it was time for an old-school “dinner and a movie” date night. Well, it ended up being “movie and dinner” as we went to the movies first.

Since we were away right after Avatar came out, we finally got on the bandwagon and contributed to its billions-of-dollars success. We saw it in Real 3D which was truly remarkable. I felt like we were there, and I actually found myself swatting away a bug that I thought was in front of me…and it was on the screen. I really loved what a beautiful movie it was, and the story wasn’t bad either! I’d highly recommend it!

By the time the movie ended, it was after 9 p.m. and my after-school snack had long since worn off, and I was super hungry! There is a new restaurant near the movie theater that I had read about on Biggest Diabetic Loser over a month ago when Biz got to visit the restaurant pre-opening. Any place that has pizza and great burgers is good with me, so Adam and I decided to try The Lucky Monk.

We walked in and I was quite impressed with the decor. It was cozy without being stuffy and trendy without being obnoxious.

We perused the menu, and while The Lucky Monk is a brewery in addition to a restaurant, we declined to get beer. I’m not a huge beer fan, and Adam wasn’t in the mood for alcohol. Adam quickly decided on a 12″ New York Style four-cheese pizza, and I went with a burger. I really appreciated that the burgers came in two sizes: a “normal” 6 oz. burger and a HUGE 9 oz. one. I wanted to feel OK about indulging in some fries, so I went with a 6 oz. “Farmhouse” burger.

Since it’s a new restaurant, the service doesn’t quite “have their stuff together” yet. It took a while to get drink refills, and our server barely checked back, but once the food arrived, I didn’t care!

Adam’s pizza was crispy, chewy, cheesy and delicious:

And my burger, a 6 oz. griddled patty with lettuce, tomato, red onion, dill pickle, Tillamook sharp cheddar cheese, and 2 slices of applewood smoked Duroc bacon was so fantastic it deserved to be put on a pedestal. As a matter of fact, the burger was on a pedestal! It gave me somewhere to set it down between bites and still be able to pick it up. The hand-cut french fries were actually well-done and crispy.

Before dinner, we decided to forgo an appetizer in favor of a dessert that had grabbed our attention: skillet s’mores. Just look at this:

This, I believe, puts Fitnessista’s favorite Pizookie to shame! It was a small cast-iron skillet stacked with layers of graham crackers, semi-sweet chocolate, mini marshmallows, and a small amount of caramel on top. It was then broiled so the marshmallows got crunchy, the chocolate melted, and everything soaked into the grahams. I can see myself dragging Adam here for dessert and coffee in the future!

I truly enjoyed our dinner at The Lucky Monk, and I love that it’s a mere 5 minutes from our house! There are quite a few other menu items I’m looking forward to trying.

Honeymoon, Take 2 or Ya, Mon! Goes International

Did you miss Part 1 or Part 2? Catch up!

On our third day, we spent a good amount of time hanging out at the main pool, which conveniently had a swim-up bar. Just check out this scenery:

It was quite possibly the most relaxing day at the pool I can remember in a long time! I tend to associate spending time at a pool with spending time with 12 screaming four-year-olds, but this was just relaxing. And it helped that we both had cocktails most of the day as well!

Our third night’s dinner was at the “Caribbean” themed restaurant where we were treated to some more “traditional” Caribbean food. It was beyond dark, and I couldn’t capture a picture of many of the dishes, but my meal included:

  • cod and tomato terrine
  • fresh vegetable salad
  • fish chowder
  • snapper and eggplant seasoned with cinnamon and hot pepper
  • “black cake”, a small gingery cake dotted with mango sauce

We had a fun time at this meal watching the little geckos skitter around the tables

I awoke the next morning a bit before Adam and took advantage of the light to take some photos of the view outside our window. This is my favorite:

I really couldn’t get over how lush and green it was there! After breakfast, we decided to spend the day at the beach and take advantage of a couple of the activities the resort had to offer. First, we chose to ride the giant aqua-trikes. What is an aqua-trike you might ask? This is an Aqua-Trike:

The one we rode was blue and green though, and it terrified the heck out of me! It worked a lot like a typical paddle boat, but made this awful clunking noise every third or fourth paddle. We “rode” out about 50 yards, then turned around and came back. We did manage to get this adorable picture though:

We then proceeded to relax on the beach the rest of the day. I finished reading Julie and Julia and now look forward to seeing the movie! Upon returning to the room, I realized that, while I applied sunscreen, I apparently didn’t apply enough… I was quite red!

Adam was calling me the reverse raccoon!! It was slightly painful, but luckily almost all the redness was gone by the next morning. We changed into nicer clothes and went to dinner at the nicer of the restaurants, and Italian-style place. We had a small wait, so we took advantage of the photo op:

Dinner was quite delicious, and I finally decided to suck it up and use a flash to capture some of the food we were eating. We both started with a ricotta and spinach ravioli with a creamy walnut sauce. I think this was both of our favorite dishes we ate on the whole trip!

It was a delicious meal, and while not “Italian” as I know it, the food was definitely good!

Honeymoon Take 2, or This Chicken is a JERK!

Did you catch Part 1 of our honeymoon update? I’m trying to come up with more fun names for each part than “part 1″ and “part 2″, but this is most definitely part 2.

Where’d we leave off? Oh right, we’d landed in Jamaica, gotten cold drinks at the Sandals lounge, I’d changed into flip flops and we got into a bus to take the 90 minute ride to our resort. I tried to get pictures out the bus window for you all, but only managed a couple of random ones:

The bus ride was bumpy, and in Jamaica, they drive on the “wrong” side of the road, so picture-taking wasn’t faring well for my slightly travel-upset stomach. I decided to just sit back and enjoy the fact that we were finally there!

When we finally arrived at the resort, our bags were taken directly to our room, and we were asked to fill in some information on a form. We were then handed our keys and escorted to our cottage room. The resort was interestingly laid out. There were two sides: the Manor and the Riviera. The Manor was the side that had the main pool, and the Riviera side had the beach…and we were on the Riviera side! The rooms were in two main types of buildings: typical “hotel” types and the cottages. Each cottage had 4 rooms separated by hallways; two upstairs and two downstairs. I loved how tropical our room was!

We got a different towel sculpture on our bed each night, but this was my favorite. Once we got the air conditioning going, we both realized exactly how hungry we were for dinner! We quickly changed and went to the nearest and most easily accessible of the 8 restaurants in the resort. There was a little bit of a wait for a table, so we enjoyed our first piña colada and waited while watching the ocean.

Since it was 80 degrees outside, we got to eat outside by candlelight, which made for great atmosphere, but as was the case the rest of the trip, I would find, made for terrible food pictures! I had to use a flash a lot, so please excuse the über-bright pics.

The restaurant was lovely

and had a 5-course menu… but we didn’t figure out until our 3rd night that we were supposed to order one of each course for EACH of us, not to share. The appetizers were about 3 bites! We shared this shrimp spring roll:

Then Adam got soup and I got an “antipasto salad” which had one of my favorite presentations of the whole trip:

That’s onion, lettuce, eggplant, zucchini, fresh mozzarella, yellow squash, and tomato.

Adam’s entree was herb-crusted lobster with ravioli, and mine was a mini rack of lamb on ratatouille:

Both tasted quite delicious, especially in our super-hungry state! We topped off the evening with desserts. I had a piña colada cake, and adam got a pineapple upside down cake:

Then it hit us… we were exhausted! We went back to our room, and after emailing to let our families know that we’d made it, we passed out!

We awoke the next morning bright and early (8 a.m.) and went in search of breakfast. I have to say, the breakfasts were one of my favorite food things at the resort. There was a fresh fruit bar, omelet station, hot dishes, and a porridge/oatmeal bar complete with toppings. Regrettably I never got a picture of it… but trust me! It was stellar.

After breakfast our first full day, we spent most of the day outside looking at this:

And when lunch time rolled around, we were treated to a special Christmas lunch (oh right, it was Christmas day!) full of local foods, including Jerk Chicken.

That was my plate, which had (from the bottom left) jerk chicken, jerk beef roast, sweet mashed yams, chicken skewer, and this stuff called “fried festival”. It was all fantastic! Expect to see many jerk-seasoned dishes on this blog in months to come!

Dinner was delicious and served out on one of the piers on the beach. It was a Mexican/Southwestern themed restaurant, and I ordered a grilled sirloin which was cooked to perfection… but one candle on the beach didn’t make for enough light for a picture… So I’ll leave you tonight with pictures of Adam and I AT dinner on the pier:
