Party Crasher!

**LONG POST AHEAD**

Months ago, when it was announced that the Healthy Living Summit would be held in my hometown of Chicago, I got really excited! To be honest, it wasn’t because I necessarily wanted to go to the conference, but because DOZENS of my favorite bloggers would be coming to our fair city!

Then, the ticket website was blocked at work, I couldn’t get a ticket, and I then vowed to my bloggie friends that I would still come downtown to hang out with them the weekend of the HLS.

Fast forward a few months, and next thing I know, I’m getting invites to dinners, texts about plans, and it hit me: all my bloggie friends were coming to town THIS WEEKEND! Plans were quickly made so no one would be overbooked (totally still happened) and I headed downtown on the train to party crash the HLS.

I arrived at the Congress Hotel and promptly met up with some people whose blogs I’ve been reading for almost two years now.

First, I saw Jenn and Melissa

Then, I met a very excited Monica, who has been a person I’ve wanted to meet for a LONG time!

IMG_6568

I also met a Hangry Heather

IMG_6569

All these girls are just as freaking fabulous as I thought they’d be! We had a chat about how to properly pronounce my name, talked to Sabrina a bit, and waved to other bloggers on their way out. There was a yoga something-or-other and a Zumba class happening, so we took a quick group picture with Chandra,

Jenn, Melissa and I hit the road on foot over to the nearest Whole Foods for a hot bar feast with none other than Gena! After I bandaged my feet (new shoes + 1.5 mile walk = bad blisters!) we made some salad beasts at the hot bar. Ok, to be honest, I filled my bowl with spinach and marinated mushrooms, then topped it with a variety of hot food.

IMG_6577

I also got this spicy tuna/rice bowl, but really I just picked the tuna and avocado off the rice.

IMG_6578

And the bloggers in action:

IMG_6575 IMG_6576 IMG_6580

I pretty much wish that Gena and Melissa would just move here so we can all hang out all the time. I’d bring the cupcakes. Sound like a plan ladies?

Kristie met up with us, and we, of course, took a group picture!

IMG_6581

No, the paddy wagon behind us was not to take us away… instead, we took a (very difficult to find) taxi to Karyn’s on Green to meet up with some more blogger friends.

IMG_6585

Since we’d just eaten, I wanted to go just to say hi to some more of the people in town! At long last, I got to meet (and hug, multiple times) the glorious Angela from Oh She Glows! She’s just as wonderful as she seems on her blog, and it was wonderful to finally meet her after nearly 2 years of internet friendship.

IMG_6590

Another group picture! I didn’t catch everyone’s names/blog names, so if you know them, please let me know!

IMG_6595

Kath and Tina were there as well, and it was great to meet Tina and see Kath again. We talked Chicago, dogs, and drinks…and I was relieved to see that Tina was dressed casually as well, since many girls got very dressed up!

IMG_6592

After some more schmoozing and chatting, I had to catch the train back to the suburbs for yet another busy day! I met Kristin for coffee in the morning, and then we both went and got our hair cut. It was great to be a bit pampered before my last week at camp. I then hopped in my car, drove for a while and magically ended up back downtown to pick up and hang out with this lovely lady:

IMG_6601

GINA!!! We then went and picked up someone else, who it was great to see for a second time in a weekend, and headed to Whole Foods.

IMG_6602

Gena, Gina, and I had a great time snacking (I got a honey Oikos, local peach, and a watermelon Hint water)

IMG_6599

We had a surprise visit from Jenn, and all too soon it was time to take Gena back to her hotel so she could go to the airport. Really, she just needs to move closer. Have I said that yet?

When Gina and I first made our plan to hang out, we said we’d play it by ear as to what we’d do. When I asked her yesterday what she’d like to do, her answer was simple: “PIZZA!” So we went to one of my favorite pizza restaurants between her hotel and the airport.

IMG_6603

Edwardo’s was one of the first places I’d had spinach stuffed pizza when I was a kid, and it’s the ONLY place that will make any pizza with whole wheat dough. I munched on a couple pizza crust crackers and sipped my Diet Coke (yes I still drink it, and I love it, no lectures please!)

IMG_6605 IMG_6607

While Gina pondered the menu.

IMG_6606

I decided on getting a classic spinach stuffed pizza to eat and share with Adam when I got home, and Gina got a cheeseless veggie whole wheat crust pizza. Except for the kind of crappy service, the whole meal was honestly amazing.

IMG_6608

IMG_6609

The look on Gina’s face when she tried her specialty deep-dish pizza was priceless. It was a combination of utter bliss and…well, utter bliss. I had two ooey-gooey cheesy and spinachy pieces just like this:

IMG_6612

It was truly wonderful to spend time with Gina outside of the airport, but way too soon, I had to drive her back to the place of our first meeting. She needs to move here too! She even told The Pilot that she wants to come live at our house…that’s fine with me!

We had some fun with my Photo Booth app on my phone before we said our goodbyes:

IMG_0295

Thank you all so much for coming to Chicago and enjoying our fair city as much as I always do! It was truly wonderful to meet you all, and put faces, voices, and hugs to the people behind the blogs.

I hope you all had as great of a weekend as I did!

TGIM!

Gilt is Good

Ok, I promise, this is the last birthday-related post since, well, my birthday was almost a week ago.

On Saturday night, a group of my closest friends and family joined Adam and I at Gilt Bar, a new gastropub here in Chicago. I’d heard a few great things about it in recent months, but the deciding factor in making it the location for my birthday party was simple:

IMG_5495

That’s my sister. And that’s an apron around her neck, because as of July, she’s the new pastry chef at Gilt Bar!

I knew I wanted to do something fantastic to celebrate my 30th birthday, and supporting my sister’s new endeavor with my best and closest seemed like the perfect thing. Adam and I endured quite a drive from home into the city on Saturday night, but in the end, it was well worth it.

IMG_5492

The place is styled with lots of old wood, leather couches, interesting light fixtures, and even has a speakeasy-style bar in the basement.

IMG_5499

IMG_5500

The cocktails are definitely something to rave about. They’re carefully mixed with interesting ingredients, and I most definitely enjoyed these two (at different times, mind you)

IMG_5490

On the left, a “Corpse Reviver” featuring brokers gin, lillet blanc, cointreau, lemon, and absinthe. I also had one “Deaths Door Daisy”, mixed with vodka, aperol, st. germain, and lemon. Let’s just say that the first trip down the steep flight of stairs to the bathroom was a challenge…and don’t even get me started on wrestling with my Spanx!

Then, the food started coming. We ordered some things, and my sister sent us some things, and everything was, in a word, fantastic.

Starters:

IMG_5494

Fresh cut french fries with garlic aoili

IMG_5496

Fois Gras mousse with grain mustard and cornichon

IMG_5498

White corn bread (apparently someone’s grandma’s recipe) with green garlic and goat butter

IMG_5502

Fresh salad with market peaches and manchengo cheese

IMG_5503

A (slightly blurry) roasted beet salad with cashews and cashew butter

IMG_5505

A salad of thinly sliced root vegetables and a creamy vinaigrette (my favorite salad!)

There were so many entrees that came to the table that I really lost track as to what everyone ordered (I know, bad blogger!) However, I made darn sure to get pictures of what Adam and I ordered. There were so many things we wanted to try that we ordered two things and split them.

First was a house-made ricotta-stuffed gnocchi with brown butter and sage. I have never in all my gnocchi eating days enjoyed a gnocchi quite like this one. I don’t know how they did it, and I’m not sure I want to know, but I do know that I’ll be wanting these again soon.

IMG_5506

We also ordered a chicken salad sandwich. It was on rustic bread with pea shoots, shaved asparagus, avocado, and a touch of lemon. Yep, definitely one of the best chicken salad sandwiches ever.

IMG_5508

On the side we ordered creamed corn made from local corn, fresh cream, jalapeños, and fresh chives. I’ll be attempting a healthier remake of this soon… it was, in Gina’s words, face-rocking.

IMG_5507

Then came the desserts. We were instructed from early in the night that we would not need to order dessert as Leigh would be sending us things she thought we’d like. Little did we know that it would be one (or more) of everything. I’m going to do my best to remember what everything was, but I can’t promise I’ll be accurate with the names. Leigh, if you can correct me, that would be fabulous! While the names won’t be accurate, I can say one thing: each and every dessert was more interesting and better than the next. None of them were sickeningly sweet, and each had a perfect balance of flavor. All of these are her creations, and I couldn’t be prouder of her!

Desserts:

IMG_5509

Super-dark chocolate truffles

IMG_5510

Handmade candies: Strawberry jelly candy, salted peanut caramels, nougat

IMG_5511

Peach butter cake with creme fraiche

IMG_5512

Chocolate peanut butter pudding with cocoa croutons

IMG_5513

My official birthday cake: perfect carrot cake with cream cheese ice cream

IMG_5515

Blackberry sundae with fresh berries, brown sugar crumble, and homemade ice cream

IMG_5516

Cherry topped Financier (Chocolate-almond cake) with fresh ice cream

After we were all sufficiently stuffed, I opened my birthday gifts. I received many cupcake-themed gifts, some geek gifts, and some foodie gifts… Everyone was so generous and thoughtful! I’m truly lucky to have such wonderful people in my life! Thank you all for a wonderful celebration!

I did remember to get a few pictures with some of the guests in attendance!

IMG_5520

Lizz, me, and Kristin

IMG_5518

Me and none other than Jenn!!

After dinner, which luxuriously lasted over 3 hours, Adam and I headed back towards the suburbs to spend a night in a deluxe hotel suite. It was so nice to be “away” to conclude my birthday celebration. We enjoyed a relaxing evening together, and it definitely felt like a vacation.

Thank you everyone, again, for making this birthday one of my most memorable! I’m truly grateful for each and every one of you!

I’ve loved hearing about your memorable birthdays on the Chavrie Contest Post, and I’ll pick a winner for that contest on Friday, August 6.

I’ll see you tomorrow night for a Wednesday in Numbers!
