“Kikked” Up Dinner {Giveaway Post}

by Mara @ What's For Dinner? on December 14, 2011

in Asian, giveaway, pork

I’m extremely picky about products that I’ll accept to try “for the blog”. I’m not one to just try something because it’s free, though there was a time where that was the case.

Usually, I’d rather try a new product from a trusted company than throw caution to the wind and try something like dehydrated shrimp paste suspended in bacon fat just because it was free “for the blog.” Ok, that was nasty. Sorry about that.

Kikkoman offered to send me a “Kikked Up Holiday” kit, full of some of their favorite products, a fun apron, rubber duck, basting brush, and a few other goodies. Among the products was something new-to-me, lime ponzu, as well as two boxes of a favorite product, panko!

When Adam and I were grocery shopping this week, we decided to stock up on protein so things could just be thrown together on a whim. Luckily, tonight’s whim included the lime ponzu and panko. And mashed potatoes that I got through the Foodbuzz Tastemaker Program. And roasted broccoli.

First up: an Asian-style pan-roasted pork tenderloin. There’s no real recipe here, just one of my “throw things in a bowl and hope it works” kind of combos. It worked!

First, 3/4 cup of the lime ponzu went into a bowl, then I whisked it with about 2 Tbsp. sesame oil, 1/2 tbsp. garlic powder, 1 tsp. onion powder, and a pinch of red pepper flakes. I added a pork tenderloin to the bowl and turned to coat it.

Fast forward an hour (and a major doggie accident…seriously, how do dogs pee so much?) and I cooked the pork just like Tyler Florence showed us at FoodBuzz fest. A quick sear on the stovetop, then into a 450°F oven for about 30 minutes. It was browned, juicy, and gorgeous!

Then, I used a scoop of Simply Potatoes mashed potatoes, some of the Kikkoman panko (i swear I don’t mean to sound like an ad!) and created some Japanese karokke: crispy potato cakes Adam and I learned to love after years of going to sushi restaurants.

I added some roasted broccoli and voila! A completely balanced meal!

That’s a dinner sized plate, not one of those silly salad plates. A glass of wine, a few squares of chocolate, and I’m a happy girl.
