Have you all missed me?? I know I’ve missed you all… but it’s been a SUPER busy week full of celebrations that went way past my bedtime most nights. Therefore, blogging has taken a back seat. But I’m back today, and make sure you’re in a comfortable seat, you have about 3 days worth of stuff to look at! I’ll keep it photo-heavy and not too much reading…
A huge thank you goes out to each and every one of you that sent me sweet birthday messages throughout the day on Thursday! Every time my phone would “ding” with a new message, I’d get a warm and fuzzy feeling!
I started my day early (5 a.m. or so) and was greeted by Adam, carrying a birthday Boston cream donut (a favorite!) with a candle in it, along with a sweet card, iced coffee, and a breakfast sandwich for later in the morning when I was sure to get hungry.
I spent my birthday at camp, and was absolutely floored by the number of cards and gifts I received! One gift in particular though, was beyond thoughtful. Two moms I’ve come to know and love over the years are What’s for Dinner readers, and presented me with this beautiful box of spices from the Spice House in Evanston, IL.
Thank you so much Lisa and Kim! These will surely make an appearance again! Camp was a blast, and I had so much fun passing out the mini cupcakes I made for the campers and staff. My little girls got one version of the cupcakes, served in appropriate “duckie” wrappers:
The remaining staff and campers got a different kind of wrapper, in the form of “nut and party cups” for a sturdier final product. They were a bit harder to unwrap, but held up so well that I can’t wait to use them again!
Later in the day, after going to the pool and hanging out with my girls for a while, my mom and David surprised me at the forest preserves with MORE cupcakes and a birthday present!
I’ll get to the gift in a minute… it was absolutely a beautiful day!
I got home to a surprise from Adam, two things I’ve wanted and wouldn’t buy for myself:
A new rolling pin (since I had kidnapped the one from the cooking room at school as my own, and had to give it back) and Toy Story on Blu-Ray! There was much more from him this weekend, but you’ll have to wait to see…
Our first stop of the night was to use the birthday present from my mom and David to get something I’ve been wanting for oh, about 5 years. It’s small, shiny, electronic, and made by Apple.
I GOT AN iPHONE!!!! I’m a little excited. The remaining pictures from the night are taken with its sexy camera.
We then headed out to a restaurant I’ve been hearing about in blog land for a while, and just opened here: Seasons 52.
Since it was, well, my birthday, I started with a glass of Moscato wine that was AMAZING (Mondavi 2008), and Adam ordered us a Pellegrino.
We started with a spicy yellowtail sushi roll (really, are you surprised?)
Adam also ordered a bowl of their buffalo chili, and I got a tomato and balsamic salad:
For my entree, it was really hard for me to decide on what to order since everything on their menu is 475 calories or under. I decided on the roasted pork tenderloin with polenta, mushrooms, spinach, and a sherry sauce. I was not disappointed!
Adam ordered the crab stuffed shrimp, which were fantastic:
Then, came one of the things Seasons 52 is famous for: their shot glass desserts! I was presented with a candle topped tower of dessert shots, and we were told to choose two… of course, we chose 4.
From the left: Strawberry shortcake, chocolate peanut butter, key lime pie, and s’mores. Mine were the middle two and they rocked. I’m so glad to know that they’re so good, because a glass of wine and shot glass desserts sounds like a fun night out to me!
Now, to help me celebrate, the lovely people at Chavrie (you know, the goat cheese people)have offered you all a fantastic giveaway. Are you ready for this? Are you sitting down? Chavrie celebrates each season, and since my favorite thing to celebrate in summer is my birthday, I wanted to time this giveaway this way. My favorite birthday memory was when I was about 6 or 7, I woke up to the sounds of people building something…I walked out to our sliding glass door, pulled back the curtain and saw a giant wooden swing set with playhouse being built. It was amazing!
I LOVE goat cheese! My favorite birthday memory is this year when I wore an 80s prom dress- or maybe in 4th grade when we made splatter paint t-shirts and I got a crimper. Ah the 90s!

I think my favorite birthday memory is when Toly proposed. He took me to the beach for the weekend and proposed on the beach the night of my birthday. It was unforgettable.

I also went to Seasons 52 on my birthday on Thursday:-) I had the lamb chops and my hubby had the crab stuffed shrimp…yummy! it was a meal to remember!
I tend to dislike my birthday because it is on Valentines Day which means everyone else is celebrating with their love but I do remember a birthday way back when I was in like 1st grade. There was a horrible snow storm (winter in Chicago, go figure) and I thought nobody would come to my birthday party but everyone ended up coming and I finally got the toy I had been waiting for, Jem! Do you remember Jem? She was the Rock Star Barbie. I guess it is the little things

Jem was Truly Outrageous!
my favorite bday memory was my 28th bday when I posed for the tradtional “me and my cake picture,” only this time I was holding my 9 month old first-born. Apparently he did not want to wait for the cake while we posed- and managed to take a nose dive into the cake just as the photo was snapped. Picture me with a goofy smile holding the hips of a child whose head was “ear-deep” in the cake.
My favorite birthday memory is just year when for the first time in my life I actually received a puppy! After 56 years that has been a long time in the making…:)

I SO wish there was a Seasons 52 near me! I have read so much about that restaurant and those little desserts look ah-mazing!!
*One* of my fave birthday memories is being surprised on my *milestone* bday. I had a party and got to mingle with friends and fam. Then around 10pm a stretch hummer limo pulled up to take me and my friends out to dance our bootays off! It was so much fun!
Favorite birthday memory is probably my 21st (since that was the last memorable one)…I’ve got 30 to look forward to next year!

I think my favorite birthday memory would have to be the first birthday I spent with Isaac. We were joking around about dressing up and he showed up dressedin a suit to take me to Fuddruckers for dinner. We have a cute picture of us sharing a milkshake.

When I was 16 years old, my mother threw me a surprise birthday party. I ended up walking into my living room, singing “happy birthday to me!” as loudly and obnoxiously as I could – only to be stopped dead by a dozen schoolmates yelling “Surprise!”
A few of them still mention it when we get together for drinks.
Oh and later on we played “Truth or Dare.” On a Dare, I went outside in my sports bra and shorts and sang “Happy Birthday to Me” on my front porch.
Yup. I’m THAT girl.
My fave BD was my 16th, and that was sooooo long ago! I had a surprise party at our house, and I was very surprised too actually!
(Happy belated BD to you, sounds like you had a fantastic time!)
I’ve been a fan on Facebook for a long time!!!
Oh man… I’ve had some great birthdays but my favorite memories are the surprise parties. I had one at 13, and TWO seperate ones at 16. All birthdays are super cool and make me feel special, but when someone went out of their way to plan something and go through the stress of trying to keep it secret? Totally super special!
And the food there – looks AMAZING. How cool is it that each dish is under 500 calories. More restaurants should do that.

my favorite birthday memory was when I was little (age escapes me) and my mom made me one of those barbie doll cakes with the real doll upper body but the dress was so nicely decorated and all cake! hmmmm, way cool and tasty too!
I am now a FB fan!!! woohooo…
My fave b-day memory is from when I was a kid and I had a pinnata – it was so fun!

Sounds like you had a fantastic birthday! The boston cream donut looks phenom!
And an iphone 4? I’m way jealous.
My favorite birthday was probably when I got a playschool purple car. I think I was 6. It was awesome.

My favorite birthday memory was probably my 25th birthday– my now husband gave me roses and took the day off work, then we enjoyed the day together, going out to eat, to our favorite park, and then out for ice cream!
My husband made a heirloom tomato salad last week with goat cheese and a white vinagarette — sooo good!
My favorite birthday memory was turning 21 and going to Chi Chi’s for drinks with my college friends.
ah, so jealous of Seasons 52! I wish we had that place here – it sounds awesome!
My favorite birthday memory is just having all my family over for my cookie cake and ice cream every year. We did low key birthday get togethers with family and close friends, and I miss that.

Happy Birthday!!!! You received my fav donut too.
I am happy to see that there is a Seasons 52 somewhat near me. I MUST have one of those desserts. They look so yummy.
Can’t wait to see the cupcake recipe. Those duckie wrappers are so cute.
Fav birthday memory??? Hmmmm…probably the last one that I had with both of my maternal grandparents with me. Nothing special, just cake and them. The following year my grandfather passed away the day after my birthday so it was definitely my least fav.
And I like you on Facebook. Very cute page!!
Sounds like you had a fabulous birthday, Mara!!
I guess my favorite bday memory was turning 21. A group of friends went out to a twisted cartoon festival where they got me up on a stage and forced to lick whip cream off an inflatable object that closely resembles a male part.
My favorite birthday memory was when I turned 16 and my parents rented a limo for myself and 3 of my friends to go by ourselves into the city, have dinner, take a carriage ride, and come back home. We had a blast! Birthdays are SO fun!
My parents used to take me to a local steakhouse and a big moose would alaways present the cake to me…so mortifying but now it is such a fond memory!

Glad you had such a wonderful birthday week Mara! My favorite birthday was when my sister and I were 16 – we both got walkmans that year (totally hip back then!) and we got a phone extension in our room. Isn’t it crazy how much technology has come since I was a teenager!!
Hope you have a great Monday!
My parents bought me a new turntable, reciever, and speakers when I turned 20 I think. I was so excited when they rolled up the garage door and were blasting music out of my new setup! It was perfect for me at the time, they’re so thoughtful!

{Happy Belated Bday Mara} My best birthday memory has to be my 16th birthday party! It was to be a very small event with friends but the entire teenage population in my town in Italy showed up so it ended up being well HUGE!

My favorite birthday memories growing up are going out for my birthday dinner with family!
I “like” you on facebook!
I saw on another blog how someone used goat cheese in their homemade macaroni and cheese recipe. I would love to try this!
My favorite Birthday memory would be my 16th birthday. I had invited all of my friends and no one could make it. I know this doesn’t sound like a stellar birthday, but it gets better I promise. So I spent my birthday all mopey, when my friend Chelsea called and told me to come over and watch a movie before she had to go to work. So I drove over there and her mom told me she was in the basement. I open the door and it was very dark which was pretty fishy. All of the sudden, I hear a loud SURPRISE! All my friends were down there as well as my parents and my grandparents!!! I was completely taken aback! It twas the best birthday surprise ever and to this day remains as one of my fondest memories.

My favorite birthday was my sixteenth – I suppose you can guess what happened. I thought I’d have to save up for years for a car, but instead, my grandparents gave me a dozen roses and their 1987 maroon thunderbird. God, I loved that car!
My fav Bday memory was probably 2 years ago when my hubby told me we would be staying in and then he suprised me by taking me to my fav seafood joint with all my friends

First, Happy Belated B-day. Sounds like you had an awesome day. My favorite b-day memory would be when I was around 7. I had my birthday at Pizza Hut and was surrounded by my friends and still remember almost all my presents. I think the reason I loved it so much is because my “baby” brother was there and I got to show him off. He was the best present ever!!
