Today, I went in search of new dishes and placemats to help make my pictures prettier and had way too much fun at Crate and Barrel! You’ll see my purchases in posts soon! While I was there, I got a call from Lizz to see if I wanted to meet for lunch, and of course I did! I love when spontaneous (though cameraless) dates work out! Towards the end of lunch, I was lamenting that I had NO idea what to make for dinner and as usual, Lizz came through.
She suggested an “Upside Down Deep Dish Pizza”. I believe my “huh?” was followed by her instructions, followed by a Homer Simpson-like drool noise.

Being the person that I am, I can’t leave well enough alone when it comes to ANY recipe, even one told to me by my best friend…so I mucked with it, but it came out fantastically!
**WARNING! These are NOT the best pictures in the world, and I’m rather embarrassed by them. After 9 photos of bowls of casserole, I came to the conclusion that there was just no way to make this pretty. And yes, my stovetop has *gasp* splatters on it! The recipe is worth it though!**
Upside-Down Deep Dish Pizza
Ingredients
* 1 batch 10-10-10 Whole Wheat Pizza Dough
* 1 small can crushed tomatoes
* 1/2 tsp. garlic powder
* 1/2 tsp onion powder
* 1/2 tsp basil
* 1/2 tsp. oregano
* 1 lb. ground beef (I used 93% lean)
* 1 bag frozen broccoli (or 1 head fresh, chopped)
* 8 oz mozzarella cheese (I used part-skim)
Directions
Pre-heat the oven to 350* and heat a large skillet on the stovetop. Add the ground beef to the skillet and brown well, stirring to break into small pieces. Add the tomatoes and spices to the beef, and simmer a few minutes. Then, add the beef to a 10×10 (or 9×13) baking pan. Top with the broccoli (or other vegetables of your choice) and then top that with the cheese. Stretch the pizza dough atop the pan, pinching it to create a seal. Poke a couple small holes in the top, then bake until the crust is browned and crispy. Cut into pieces and serve.

It was really remarkable that the flavor of this was almost identical to a great deep-dish pizza! I used a large can of tomatoes, and realized that it was far too much liquid, so in the recipe above, I reduced it to a small can. Thank you for the recipe idea Lizz! We loved it!
I’ve got a few fun recipes planned for the week, so make sure you come back to check them out. It’s back on track time after two weeks of holidays and celebrations, so be prepared to see some healthy alternatives to some old favorites!
Hope you all have a wonderful Monday!

I just found a recipe for a deep dish pizza that I want to try! This looks so awesome – my hubby would die and go to heaven if I made this!

I love the new look! The colors really pop.
I am the exact same way with a recipe. I NEVER EVER follow it exactly. This is why I can’t bake, I believe.
The pizza does look and sound pretty remarkable though.
Have a wonderful night hun!

Thanks for the great recipe. And look forward to more this week
What a GREAT idea! Pizza usually has to be a splurge food for me, but that looks like it can be filling without being too many calories! I am SO trying this next week.

That was my thought too! A reduced-fat mozz, lots of veggies and lean meats with the whole wheat crust are more like a calorie bargain!
That sounds fantastic- such a unique idea! I am definitely going to give this one a try.
I love that pizza is something to just play and have FUN with.

Looks good. So how long do you usually bake yours?
This one baked for a good 25 minutes!
I went to Crate and Barrel today too…whoohoo! That was very Homer-esque.
Are you referring to my 5th husband Jack Johnson with your title? We are going to see him in concert in October and I can’t wait!!!!

I’m glad you guys liked it!! I love that it’s the sort of recipe that can be changed to suit anyone. When I made it, Skylar whoofed it down, and then asked if we could take it with us the next time we went out to dinner. =)
And thats why we keep Skylar around
Yum…I think the picture looks great!
Thanks Kelly!
Love the new look and the intriguing pizza idea! It must be an upsidedown kind of week. I just made a blood orange polenta upside down cake. Another “Huh”/drool-worthy recipe. i’ll be trying this one soon!
I like the new blog color scheme!
I’ll have to try that pizza dough. I had a disaster with the TJ’s dough last week so I’m willing to try anything at this point for a decent wholewheat dough!

LOVING the new look!
Your pizza isn’t very photogenic, but it looks DELISH!!! I usually use Trader’s dough, but hope I get the courage to try it on my own some time.
Hope you’re having a great Mon!

Glad you liked it too
Your new look looks great! Who helped you with the new layout? I’d like to make some changes to mine and as you know, I’m very technologically inept
Hope school is going well!
My fiance and I are definitely going to be trying this, probably sans the ground beef. It just looks amazing, and I blogged last week about how pizza is my weakness. You’re a lifesaver!!

It would work without the ground beef, but I think adding something like lentils instead would be even better!
WOW! This looks amazing and seems super easy too. I am always modifing recipes to what I have in the house.
