I found myself craving something odd today.
Ok, I guess odd is not the right word… unusual. That’s better.
Usually, when I get food cravings, they’re for something like chocolate. Or caramel. Or peanut butter. Or chocolate and caramel covered peanut butter. But today? No, today was unusual.
*Before you ask, no I’m not pregnant!*
I found myself walking up and down the aisles of my classroom, helping kids conjugate the verb “tener” and craving nothing but brussels sprouts. Yes, brussels sprouts. I’ve always liked them, but I never in a million years thought I’d crave them!
Then it hit me. It’s been DAYS since I’ve had enough vegetables in my diet to make it count for anything… sure I’ve had onions and tomatoes, and broccoli in last night’s conglomeration of random dinner… but nothing just GREEN. My body was craving nutrition.
I decided that I was going to go to the grocery store and get the supplies for a truly balanced meal. Lots of veggies, some oil, protein…
I got a flank steak, and made a rub of garlic, black pepper, olive oil, salt, and a touch of hot pepper. I steamed some brussels sprouts. I made my mom’s roasted potatoes. I made simple horseradish cream.

Personally, I think the steak is gorgeous

That is a gorgeous steak! I’ve craved salads before, but never brussel sprouts

Yum! I agree- brussel sprouts are a bit of an unusual craving, but I had it myself last week!
hehe
The flank steak also looks delicious. I cooked Laura’s cheese cabbage again last night, so I had to go back on my blog to get the recipe and it just so happened to be served w/ flank steak. I was drooling over the pics again!! Man, that’s some good stuff – love the horseradish cream w/ it!
So exciting for the wedding! It is SOON!

I need to return to more green vegetables myself…I would like my plate to be dominated by greens! It’s usually not…
I want hot chocolate ice cream with baby marshmallows! The problem with hot chocolate is that it is hot, so I’d love to try it cold, er, frozen.

omG! I have seen that hot chocolate ice cream and have been debating about whether or not to pick it up. I’m not a huge fan of chocolate ice cream – but I’d imagine HC IC would taste a little difft, right?

It was SO GOOD! Tasted just like hot cocoa, as opposed to the rich chocolate ice cream flavor that we’re used to. Worth a try!

I have definitely craved brussel sprouts myself, and I remember feeling the same way. Sometimes the body just screams, “you need veggies!” my body was doing that yesterday!

I am also a brussel sprouts lover and found a new way to make them ever more exciting, green apples sauteed with the sprouts. The sweetness is a perfect pairing with the wonderful bitterness of the sprouts. Just wanted to share

Mara I’m sooo excited for you!! It is seriously SO SOON! I want many pictures!!! Even if you have to e-mail them to me.
I have found myself craving brussel sprouts too!!! I’ve never tried them roasted, but they really look good when they’ve got that char. However, i DO love yours too. I like mine steamed so there’s some sweetness and bitterness, but it only gets too bitter when they’re overcooked I think.
P.s. Would’nt it be cool if you were pregnant? *wink wink* heheh ok ok just kidding…but soon!

Man, you get some of the coolest foods in the US. Hot Chocolate ice cream? Yum!
And you know, I used to hate brussel sprouts. Most of my life really, I’d say even a few years ago I thought they were satan’s spawn. But now I enjoy them. I prefer them roasted, but I can do steamed as well.
