I kinda lied.
I said earlier that I’d be back for dinner, but this post is not about dinner. This post is about a late lunch/linner.
After Adam’s sister’s bridal shower today and then socializing for a while, we both found ourselves hungry. Since we were in Adam’s hometown, he suggested we go to a hamburger place that he used to frequent when he was still living in the area.
Adam’s been talking about taking me to Schoop’s ever since our first trip to Northwest Indiana to visit his mom. The problem? Lunch or dinner is always a destination when we head out that way, so visiting a place like this is usually out of the question. I was really excited to finally try this place that Adam loved so much!
When we walked in, it was extremely obvious that NOTHING in the place had changed in the last 30 years except for the music in the mini jukeboxes on the tables.
You may not notice that there’s Outkast in here, but I swear, it was there:
We ordered diet Coke, and got a tiny glass of water too.
The menu is simple and fairly limited, and apparently slightly expanded from when Adam was younger.
Can you guess what they’re famous for? They have hamburgers that deserve to be on Diners, Drive-Ins, & Dives! They’re extremely thin, and amazingly crispy on the edges, and overhang the small puffy buns by about 3/4″ all the way around. I got a classic cheeseburger (upon Adam’s suggestion!) which came with American cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, ketchup, and mustard.
I could not believe my taste-buds when I bit into this burger. It was simple and not mucked up with anything fancy, and the crispy edges will have me trying to figure out how to make this burger for weeks to come. I know I won’t be able to recreate it because I don’t have a 50-year-old seasoned flat top grill! We decided to treat ourselves a bit and get some of their french fries too, which apparently, MUST be drizzled with ketchup upon eating rather than dipping.
What was nice about Schoop’s was that the serving sizes were exactly how they’d been forever. Sure, the burger looks huge, but it couldn’t have been more than 4 ounces. The baskets weren’t enormous; just about the size of a kid’s meal basket at most “normal” restaurants. I left the restaurant satisfied, and am just now getting hungry for dinner. I may just have a bowl of cereal and imagine that it’s another Schoop’s burger.
I’m still exhausted from the overnighter on Friday since I stayed so busy yesterday… so I’m going to rest up. Tomorrow is another busy day at camp, and we’re spending the whole day at a water park! Must. Remember. Sunblock.

Those tiny glasses of water always drive me nuts! I’m like – that is ONE SIP – but I do appreciate they give you enough DC – you can never have too much DC

I have been going to Schoops since I was old enough to eat a cheeseburger. My Dad’s favorite burgers in the world. He grew up Hammond Indiana. Him and his friends were told when they were younger that the only way to order a Schoops burger is to say, “Double meat, double cheese, double grease.” As a kid, I even had a Schoops windbreaker. I am glad you got to experience it. They used to have one at Stratford in the food court, but I believe it is gone now.
