Because of this lovely “Spring” weather we’re having, and varying barometric pressure, I ditched out on Jazzercise tonight with a KILLER headache. I took some Advil, but it’s just not going away! I also, being the rather emotional eater that I am, really wanted comfort food. My first thought went to pizza, but as a Chicagoan, if I’m going to do pizza, I’m going to do it right. I decided to go to the grocery store and peruse the aisles (well, the perimeter) and see what struck me as delicious. My mind started to wander. I wanted “Mom” food. As I got to the deli meat section, I saw big “buy one get one free” signs on quite a few things. One of these things was Eckrich Turkey Smoked Sausage.
BINGO! Phone out, dialing mom, phone ringing… “MOOOOOOOM I have a headache and want to make your smoked sausage recipe thing you used to make whats in it??” Phew, dinner solved.
I came home, sliced up a big sweet potato for oven fries, and got going on the simplest of simple dinners (Even my freshman-in-college former co-counselor at camp could make this!) The sauce works well with beef sausage too, or even with ground beef for a quick sloppy Joes recipe.
Simple? Yes. Delicious? YES!
Mom’s Smoked Sausage in Sauce
Ingredients
1 pkg. turkey smoked sausage
1 jar Bennetts Chili sauce
1/2 c. ketchup
2 tbsp. red wine vinegar
1 Tbsp. dijon mustard
Directions
In a pot, mix all ingredients together except the sausage. Slice the sausage into bite-sized pieces, and stir into the sauce. Simmer over low heat until sauce is slightly thickened. Serve and enjoy!
This recipe was a Hanukkah staple for many years, as well as a great everyday meal when I was growing up. It was wonderful to have it in my own house, and even better to know that the recipe is so easy! There may or may not be seconds of some plain sausage, as well as some of my newest blogger-inspired purchase: SO DELICIOUS Coconut Milk chocolate ice cream! I’m so beyond excited to have found it!
Did you all see my new button over there? ———–>
I made myself a blogroll button! Get it? Sushi roll…blog roll… ok, I’m a nerd. Zesty, do you approve??
Have you checked out Jenna’s Blogger Dessert E-Cookbook? It can be yours for the low, low price of a $10 donation to her Team In Training site! It’s really fantastic! I have a recipe in there too
QOTD: Would you be interested in an e-cookbook of my recipes?
It’s time to nurse the headache and watch the LAST episode of ER! Have a great night!

At first, i thought those were weiners & beans, but then I realized they were lacking the beans. And they weren’t actually weiners. They made me want some weiners and beans though! HA!

there is nothing as comforting as mum food!!! it’s interesting to see what everyone’s different “mum” foods are, depending on what they ate while growing up, etc. for example, although your dish sounds yummy it wouldn’t be a comfort food for me at all – real japanese cuisine is where my heart lies

I love the new button, and I hope your headache is better! We used to make something similar to your sausage dish when I was a kid, except it was sweeter. It involved chili sauce and grape jelly. Kind of weird, but my memories are fond ones!!
