I went to the doctor today. Don’t worry, there’s nothing wrong… I just had to have my yearly “girl” exam. But in the context of the exam and the doc asking “What else is up?” I burst into tears. I explained to her that over the past 2 years, I’ve eaten right and stayed fairly active (though the hardcore workouts just started 3 weeks ago), and followed Weight Watchers and CANNOT seem to lose any more weight. Sure, I’ve lost 45 lbs and kept it off for almost 2 years… but when I have 55 more to go, it’s a drop in the bucket.
I explained to my doctor (I just started seeing her last year) that my previous doctor had prescribed Lexapro (an anti-depressant) and Phentermine (a strong diet drug) to help me lose weight. I had easily lost about 30 pounds and was happy at 160 when my Phentermine prescription ran out. I continued taking my Lexapro. Within 6 months I was up almost 50 lbs, and within a year I was up to my highest weight ever. She asked me for my “weight loss timeline” and I broke it down for her. We figured out that for these last 6 years since I’ve been on Lexapro, I’ve never been below 200 lbs. My doc was fairly surprised that with my diet the way it is with the lean meats and whole grains and fruits and veggies, and the recent exercise that I was not only not losing weight, but gaining.
We (together) came to a conclusion and made a decision: The Lexapro needs to go. I’m going to gradually wean myself off of it over the course of about 2 months and see how I feel. I have a whole schedule on how to do it, and hopefully, it will help me start losing weight again. She told me that I would not be the first person she’d seen who lost weight at first on Lexapro, and then had it just stop. I’m a bit nervous about it… that little white pill has been a daily occurence in my life for 6 years, as have its effects.
Something that really hit me though, was that I don’t even know if the effects were necessary. While sure, before I started taking it, I’d have my ups and downs, and my downs were a little lower than they are now. But REALLY thinking about it, I was always a happy person with a few “issues”, and they were NOT issues I would thik to medicate away now. We’ll see how this all goes! It’s a brand new adventure.
Wow, that was long and rambling… sheesh! Was that an overshare? No… I think an overshare would’ve been to tell you in more detail what else went on at that exam!
After my doctor’s appointment, I met a friend of mine for dinner. Michele and I have been working at the same summer job since well, before she could really work at this summer job! She was a camper at Good Times Day Camp in 2000 when I started working there, and we clicked right away. She was just a “cool kid”. Now, 10 years later, she’s like a little sister! We went to P.F. Changs for dinner and I officially have a new favorite dish: Stir-Fried Eggplant with Brown Rice
Spicy, sweet, saucy, and 3 veggie servings!
There was a very cool mini-dessert thing that they have at P.F. Changs too! You all know how much I love tiny food, and tiny desserts are a total weakness of mine, and there were 8 different choices!! I got a “lemon supreme” shot and Michele got a “S’Mores” shot.
They even came with a tiny spoon!
It was a very long, stressful, and draining afternoon, but I’m hoping that something positive will come of all of this! Here’s to challenges, changes, and TINY DESSERTS!
Thanks for reading my ramblings tonight… you’re all the best!

I was on Lexapro in college, and went off cold turkey because I couldn’t afford it anymore. You know, as soon as I went on it, I gained a lot of weight. It didn’t come off right away, because I kept eating like crap. It made me feel better, but really messed with my eating, I think.
I think it’s great you made a plan to get off of it! Good luck!

Hopefully going on the meds will help you out in your weight loss journey. I think that if you can safely go off meds, then it has to be better for your body. Good luck with it!
And those dessert shots are so adorable

the same medication can have different effects on different persons, it sounds weird but it happens sometimes. I know you feel insecure quitting it because you were get used to it already no matter if it does what you want, but at least you know what to expect. Now, quitting it brings you to something completely different and as human nature we feel uncomfortable facing uncertainty, I totally know that kind of feeling. The other day I talked to a friend and he told me that uncertainty isn’t a bad thing per se, think it as a challenge, a change to something better and you’re be excited, but positively.
good luck!

Thanks for sharing this with us, Mara. I’m sorry things haven’t been going better for you… a couple things:
1) Even though you’re halfway to your goal… you are still HALFWAY and that is amazing! Some people give up early and don’t even get that far. Plus, even if you aren’t losing weight as quickly as you’d like – you are still getting healthier, which means you’ll live longer and happier
2) That being said, I know how frustrating it can be to “do everything right” and not see the pounds drop. It’s happening to me right now.
3) You can wean yourself off meds. I have faith in you. Who you were six years ago and who you are now are two different people – you might be able to better handle your stress without the meds, you know? Plus you got that great fiance by your side

sorry to be a killjoy, but if your symptoms werent that bad why did they put you on an antidepressant in the first place? its frightening how quick doctors are with those notepads- and how easily they can mess with someone’s life.
good for you for getting off of them.

@Kelly Thats part of why I’m getting off them now… my old doctor was VERY med-happy and would prescribe ANYTHING. I’m interested to see how this goes.
I’m wishing you a smooth road. It sounds like a very positive step!

Mara – good luck with the new journey of yours. It sounds like you’re approaching this, from all angles, positively and with a good game plan. Self awareness is key when going off meds, and it sounds like you got that and then some!

Mara, one of my closest family members is on Lexapro and I’m a little scared of the effects of him going off it! But you seem to know for sure that you don’t need it, and that is really waht counts. Take care of yourself and make sure you surround yourself with loved ones who truly care. If anything, please blog blog blog about everything so at least we can share your journey with you and TRY to be of some help or support!! Good luck!!

And, I think desserts served in shot glasses is PURE GENIUS. There is a PF Chang’s not far from here. I’d better get over there.

Very interesting post. I think it’s fantastic that you are being pro-active about the issue and I wish you all the best with it. Breaking any habit is hard, let alone one with a physical dependency like a drug. You are going to do great.
Eggplant looks divine…tastes like chicken? Hehe.

Firstly, a big CONGRATULATIONS for losing (and keeping off) the weight, that’s SUPER!!
Second, I’m glad you found a less ‘script-happy doc. We’re all behind as you wean yourself off the meds, good luck!
Thirdly, OMG how cute are the little shots!

I am really digging how open and honest you are in your posts, Mara. I really hope that going off of Lexapro will help you. I definitely agree with what’s been said here – doctors can sometimes be very quick to prescribe/vaccinate, etc. I’ve got some doctor “history” in my family on that very issue that makes everyone a little leery. I hope that this is the solution for you, but I do want you to remember that you are still incredibly inspiring already – you are constantly working toward your goal and creating healthy and delicious meals all the time. Even without an ultimate goal of weight loss…that is still a GREAT way to live!!!
